What the work involves
- Explain the question you need a lawyer to answer.
- Put the relevant papers and dates in order for the consultation.
- Understand who will advise you and what the consultation includes.
- Work out whether you need a written opinion, a draft reviewed or help with a dispute.
What to put in the first note
Write a short account of what has happened, with dates where you know them. Include the decision in front of you: whether to pay an advance, sign a draft, respond to a notice or agree to a family arrangement. Mention a deadline at the beginning rather than leaving it until the end of the conversation.
If you have already received advice, bring that too. It helps the advocate see what has been considered and what has changed. You do not need to turn your account into legal language. A clear description of the facts, the papers available and the question you want answered is more useful.
Documents to have available
- A brief chronology of the matter
- Relevant deeds, notices or drafts already available
- Specific questions and any approaching dates
- Previous advice or pending proceedings relevant to the discussion
If you have received a notice, have a hearing date or are being asked to sign soon, tell us that first. Then write down the short version: who is involved, what has happened and what you want to resolve. Bring earlier advice too, even if you are looking for a second view.
Before work begins
Before the consultation, we’ll explain the advocate’s role, the fees and what you can expect to receive. You should know how to raise a follow-up question afterwards.
Questions about property verification
Can I speak to someone even if my paperwork is incomplete?
Yes. Tell us what you have and what is missing. That is enough to begin a conversation, although the lawyer may need more records before giving a view on your property.
What if I only need advice on one clause?
Identify the clause, but keep the full document available. A sentence may depend on definitions, schedules or other clauses elsewhere in the draft. Explain what you understand it to mean and what concerns you.
